Two characters threaten each other over a girl. It's implied a young woman is forced to seduce men as part of her informing duties. Two characters are so severely beaten they are rendered nearly unrecognizable. A group of children age 6 to 17 are forced to clean feces and from a filthy prison bathroom floor with their hands. A group of arrested protestors, including small children, are take one at a time, beaten (in a couple of cases to unconsciousness) and humiliated. People are routinely arrested for minor infractions and everyone lives under a cloud of potential suspicion from neighbors, friends, even family members. The Securitate beats and kills people, or arrests and disappears them.
The book depicts state-sponsored torture and murder.
